The best European destinations to visit for an Autumn getaway

Looking for a few days to escape reality this Autumn? If so, it sounds like a city break is in order.

Although the warmer months are typically the preferred season for travel, destinations can come into their own once the August crowds have left and the locals have returned from their own holidays. A drop in the temperature doesn’t take away from the charm, hospitality or attractions a city has to offer, and with blue skies still on the cards as well as a price drop now the kids are back at school, why not treat yourself?

Amsterdam

Just a nip over the pond, Amsterdam is the ideal choice for a long weekend away. Orange and yellow leaves frame the stunning canals as Autumn creeps in and there are plenty of events and activities to get involved with. Temperatures remain pretty much the same as in the UK, so no need for last minute holiday shopping and you can pack light knowing it won’t be too cold.

Rent bicycles and cycle around the centre, make your own personalised beer bottle at the Heineken Museum, take a boat trip along the canals or visit one of the many museums including the Anne Frank House. Not to mention the shopping is fabulous with a range of small businesses to glossy big retailers. There truly is something for everybody in Amsterdam.

Paris

Paris is always a good idea! Just as romantic but less hectic now autumn has arrived, the French capital is a great choice for a quick getaway. Despite being just a short flight or train ride away, our French neighbours have the luxury of mild temperatures late in the year; perfect if you’re after somewhere slightly warmer than home but still want to enjoy an autumnal aesthetic.

Paris is another city packed with things to do and sights to see. Spend an afternoon at the Louvre, wander up the Eiffel Tower, book a ticket to the Moulin Rouge, take a day trip to Disneyland or even book a tour of the Paris Catacombs to get in the spirit of Halloween; there is so much to do. The food is also fantastic, famous for their macarons, giant croissants and amazing cheeses, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants to indulge – you could even try some snails and frogs’ legs!

Prague

The seasonal hues that autumn offers truly bring the best out of Prague. Known as the ‘Golden City’, Prague’s architecture is second-to-none. Made up of medieval buildings, cathedrals and towers that are decorated with golden accents and spires, it truly feels as if you’ve been transported to another world.

Walking around and taking in the city sights is entertaining in itself, never mind the other attractions on offer. Visit the Prague Castle (the largest ancient castle in the world) and stunning Cathedrals, stroll down the unique Golden Lane and enjoy the views from the Klementinum astronomical tower. There are so many places to eat and drink, especially in Old Town! We recommend trying a Trdelnik, although this delicious dessert doesn’t have Czech origins, they do an amazing version.

This city is a history buff’s dream, but there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Dubrovnik

An ancient walled city surrounded by mountains and crystal clear waters, Dubrovnik is truly unique. Avoid the intense heat and crowds of tourists summer brings and visit in Autumn instead. Temperatures sit comfortably in the early twenties offering an escape from the miserable British weather and means a dip in the water is still on the cards if you fancy a swim or taking on some water sports.

The city itself is stunning, with many Hollywood productions being shot in the centre and much like Prague, the polished marble and ancient buildings feel as though you’re living in a fantasy. The local cuisine is to die for and the wine is out of this world with many restaurants overlooking the beautiful views of the city. Visit the forts and palaces, walk (or swim) the city walls and take a cable car up Mount Srd.

Lanzarote

If a few days isn’t enough of a break away, Lanzarote makes a great location to holiday in Autumn. With temperatures remaining quite high in the early-mid twenties range, it’s a fantastic and more affordable option of a warmer climate to escape to in the cooler months. Although relaxing on a sun lounger with the occasional dip in the sea sounds delightful, there are so many things to do on the island.

If you’re feeling adventurous scuba dive down to the Museo Atlántico, the world’s first underwater sculpture museum, or take a coach tour around the Timanfaya National Park where you can observe an exciting overview of a sea of lava. If that’s not quite your scene, explore the charming markets, enjoy some local food at the Marina Rubicon or visit the Jameos del Agua caves. Lanzarote is packed with things to do and explore, even in the later months.
