The best Christmas Eve traditions the whole family will love

Aside from hanging up your stockings and putting on a Christmas movie, what are your Christmas Eve traditions? Are you in need of some new ones? Check out our round-up of the best Christmas Eve activities. Regardless of your family's size, there is something on our list for everyone.

Exchange one small gift

No matter how old you are, everyone gets excited when they receive a Christmas Eve treat. In some countries, including Germany, Poland and Switzerland, presents are traditionally exchanged on Christmas Eve. Why not borrow from tradition? Wrap up a small gift and place it on your loved one's pillow and watch their faces when they finally discover it. Some gift ideas include bath bombs, pajamas or slippers, all perfect for a cosy festive evening.

Festive Feasting

Whether its a takeaway or a homemade buffet, feasting shouldn't just be for Christmas Day. Extend the fun and tuck into some well deserved treats with family, friends or loved ones.

On saying this, you should choose your Christmas Eve buffet wisely. Pick things that take minimal effort to make and are easy to clean up. That way you can leave your kitchen tidy, prepared to take on the pressures of a Christmas Day dinner.

For the takeaway run...

Have a games night

Playing simple board games such as Snakes and Ladders or card games is a great way to spend the night before Christmas. Watch the hours of family bonding go by as you laugh and (enviably) argue. After all, what's Christmas without "Battle of the board games'? You could even put some Christmas music on in the background. Can you get more festive than that?

Family Walks

Taking an afternoon walk is a great way to release any pent-up energy the kids have before the big day. Stretch your legs, unwind and walk up an appetite, you're going to need it!

Alternatively, wait until it gets dark and head out on an evening walk around the neighborhood, spotting all the magical Christmas lights and decorations. Treat yourself to a mug of hot chocolate on your return. You are bound to find yourself in a festive mood!

For those little adventures...

Merry Making

From crafts to cookies to letter-writing, there are plenty of ways for parents to contain excitement while creating festive fun. Leaving out a glass of milk and a plate of cookies for Santa is a famous Christmas Eve activity. Freshly baked cookies are Santa's favourite treats after all. Why not make it a tradition? These are the wholesome moments that make memories.

Cocktail Evening

If your children are past their Christmas movie and baking for Santa phase, why not replace letter-writing with a boozy make-your-own cocktail evening? Partnered with board games and a takeaway, is there a better way to spread Christmas cheer? If you're stuck for recipes, check out our ultimate Christmas cocktail guide. With mocktails for non-drinkers, everyone is guaranteed a merry and wholesome time.
