Kick start your new year off right: A guide to 'shoe' year resolutions
The new year brings about a wave of resolutions and new goals. Whether it's eating better or being more active, many of us make January all about developing healthy habits. Yet, how many think about the impact these ambitions have on their feet? Prevent lasting injuries and make this year all about developing your foot health.
Implement a daily footcare routine
With only 2 in 10 people regularly considering their foot health, there's no wonder why so many struggle with painful foot conditions. Make 2024 all about prioritising your feet with a quick and easy footcare routine. By moisturising daily and exfoliating weekly, you’re guaranteed a softer and healthier feel.
Start by cleaning your feet thoroughly. This is so important as it reduces the risk of infection and prevents other health conditions further down the line such as joint problems and poor circulation. Pat down your feet until dry and finish by moisturising the area, an important step in any skincare routine!
Don’t forget to inspect your feet for any discolouration, fissures, and ingrown toenails. These inspections are the best way to spot any foot conditions early and get treatment.
It's no secret that cutting toenails is a must for good hygiene but are you doing it correctly? Experts recommend that you cut straight across, carefully filing the edges. Did you know that cutting too short or at a wrong angle could lead to ingrown nails? Don't underestimate the need for perfectly trim toenails!
Keep active
If your new years vision board pictured long walks and healthy-looking feet then you're in luck! Did you know that daily exercise can contribute to your overall foot strength and mobility? With improved circulation and balance, who knows what you will accomplish.
From heel and calf raisers to toe walking there are plenty of feet-focused exercises to incorporate into your workout. Yoga and Pilates are great disciplines that promote foot health by focusing on stretching, strengthening, and improving flexibility in the feet and ankles. Walking is also a great way to improve circulation, strengthen muscles, and maintain flexibility so getting your steps in will not only benefit your overall health but your feet too.
Switch it up
While exercising is a great way to keep your feet healthy, without proper fitting shoes, you're at a higher risk for athlete's foot, collapsed arches and joint pain. Alternate athletic shoes every six months to ensure proper support overtime. Consider adding insoles or a high-quality pair of socks for extra cushioning and stability.
To ensure good foot health, save flip-flops and heels for special occasions this year, opting for protective and supportive shoes for your everyday wear.
Wearing the wrong size shoe is estimated to result in up to 80 percent of foot problems so make sure to get your feet measured by an expert and avoid buying shoes that feel overly tight or uncomfortable, your foot health is more important! Shop our selection of quality wide-fitting shoes for fashionable comfort that will last.
