International Women’s Day: 6 Inspirational Women Who Changed the World
At Gabor, we believe style is about more than what you wear; it’s about confidence, character and the stories that shape you. That’s why International Women’s Day feels so close to our hearts. While 8th March marks a global celebration, the entire month invites us to reflect on the women who inspire us, in our families, our workplaces and throughout history.
This year, we’re honouring six remarkable women whose brilliance, resilience and individuality continue to leave their mark. From science labs to royal palaces, from literary salons to courtrooms, their stories remind us that progress is powered by courage.
So, pour a coffee, settle in, and learn more about inspirational women.
Marie Curie
Born in 1867 in Poland, Marie Curie relocated to Paris to follow her passion for science. She went on to become the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and remains the only person to have won Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields. Her pioneering research on radioactivity led to the discovery of polonium and radium, transforming modern science and medicine.
But what makes her truly inspirational isn’t just her intellect; it’s her perseverance. In a male-dominated world, she quietly and confidently reshaped it. Her legacy continues to encourage women to step into spaces where they may be the first, but certainly not the last.
Diana, Princess of Wales
Graceful, compassionate and endlessly empathetic, Princess Diana redefined what it meant to use influence for good.
Beyond her timeless style, she was deeply committed to humanitarian work, from supporting the homeless to raising awareness around mental health and campaigning against landmines. At a time when stigma surrounded HIV and AIDS, she helped shift public perception with simple but powerful gestures of kindness.
She showed the world that strength and softness can coexist. That leadership can be led by heart. And that compassion is a powerful legacy.
Michelle Obama
Lawyer. Author. Advocate. Former First Lady.
Michelle Obama has long championed education, equality and self-belief. During her time in the White House, she launched initiatives promoting healthy lifestyles, supporting military families and encouraging young people to pursue higher education.
What makes her so relatable is her authenticity. She speaks openly about self-doubt, resilience and finding your voice, reminding women everywhere that their background does not define their potential. Her message is simple but powerful: believe in yourself and then lift others as you rise.
Amelia Earhart
In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, a feat that captured the world’s imagination.
But her story is about more than records and headlines. She actively encouraged women to pursue careers in aviation and other male-dominated industries, challenging expectations at every turn. Her disappearance in 1937 only deepened her legend, but it’s her fearless spirit that endures.
She reminds us that sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is take off, even when the skies seem uncertain.
Jane Austen
Long before modern conversations about women’s independence, Jane Austen was writing sharp, observant novels about love, society and financial security.
Through works like Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, she explored the limited choices available to women, often with wit, irony and remarkable insight. Writing at a time when female authors were rarely taken seriously, Austen carved out a voice that still resonates centuries later.
Erin Brockovich
Not all heroes wear lab coats or crowns. Some carry stacks of paperwork and refuse to give up.
Erin Brockovich, with no formal legal training, helped build a case against a major utility company for contaminating drinking water in California. Her relentless investigation led to one of the largest settlements in U.S. history for a direct-action lawsuit.
Her story is a powerful reminder that determination and courage can challenge even the most powerful institutions. You don’t need a title to make change, just tenacity.
Celebrating Women, Every Day
We’re constantly inspired by women who lead, create, nurture, build and break boundaries, often all at once. From historic pioneers to modern changemakers, their stories shape the world we walk through today.
International Women’s Day may be a moment to pause and reflect, but celebrating women is something we believe in all year round.
Here’s to confidence. And here’s to women, past, present and future, who continue to step forward with strength and style.
