Friendship facts for international friend day
Today marks international friendship day, which gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate the people who make life brighter simply by being part of it. Friendships shape our happiest memories, support us through difficult moments and remind us that meaningful connection is one of life’s greatest comforts. Whether it is the friend who always knows how to make you laugh, the one who listens without judgement, or the person who understands you before you even explain yourself, true friendship is something worth appreciating. Friendship not only enriches our social lives but also plays a powerful role in our emotional wellbeing, confidence and overall happiness.
To celebrate, we’ve gathered some fascinating friendship facts that highlight how important these relationships truly are, scientifically, psychologically and emotionally. They are the perfect reminder of why meaningful friendships deserve to be nurtured all year round.
200-Hour Rule
Building close friendships takes more than a few conversations. Psychologists suggest that it takes around 50 hours of shared time to move from acquaintance to casual friend, while over 200 hours together is often needed for someone to become a close or best friend.
It is a reminder that strong friendships are built gradually through consistency, shared experiences and genuine effort. The friendships that feel the most natural are often the ones formed over years of conversations, routines and memories.
Friendships Help Build Resilience
Friendship has a remarkable impact on both mental and physical wellbeing. Studies have shown that people with strong social circles tend to experience lower levels of stress and often cope better during difficult life events.
Supportive friendships can improve resilience, encourage healthier habits and even contribute to a stronger immune system. Simply having someone to talk to, laugh with or rely on during challenging times can make a significant difference to emotional wellbeing.
The ‘Seven-Year Itch’ of Friendship
Much like relationships, friendships often evolve in phases. Experts suggest that many friendships naturally shift every seven years as people grow, change lifestyles or move through different stages of life.
While some friendships may fade, others strengthen and adapt over time, becoming even more meaningful through shared experiences and personal growth. Studies have suggested that if a friendship survives more than seven years, then it’s highly likely to last a lifetime.
Improved Cardiovascular Health
Spending time with friends creates a solid social support network that decreases the risk of depression and helps maintain healthier blood pressure, leading to a low-stress life. Friendship encourages positivity and provides emotional grounding during stressful periods
Laughter
Did you know laughing with friends acts as a powerful social glue? Scientifically, it triggers the release of endorphins, the brain’s natural feel-good chemical, promoting bonding, reducing stress and elevating pain tolerance. Laughing intensifies feelings of well-being, trust and relaxation.
It too is a stress reducer; laughter lowers cortisol levels, the stress hormone, while boosting dopamine and serotonin, which helps the body reset after a stressful event.
Celebrate Friendship Every Day
International Friendship Day is a beautiful reminder to celebrate the people who support, encourage and uplift us throughout life. Whether it is through a thoughtful message, making time for a catch-up or simply expressing gratitude, small gestures can strengthen friendships in lasting ways.
True friendship is one of life’s most valuable connections, while proven the to improve our health physically and mentally. This July, take a moment to appreciate the friends who make your world brighter and remind them just how much they mean to you.
