A Sophisticated Halloween: Six things to do this October
Happy October!
October has arrived, and with it comes the chance to slow down, pre-plan your days, and make the most of the season. But we’re not talking about scream-fests, itchy novelty costumes, or supermarket shelves stacked with plastic pumpkins. This October, let’s move away from the predictable Hallmark Halloween and step into something a little more elevated: a season that feels warm, cosy, and sophisticated.
Sophistication doesn’t mean expensive. Some of the best autumn activities are low-cost (or free!), think vibrant foliage, comforting food, and traditions that create lasting memories. September may have brought routine, but October gives us the chance to pause, savour the changing season, and carve out plans (not just pumpkins) that will stay with us long after the leaves fall.
Whether you lean towards the homebody life or crave more adventurous plans, there’s a way for everyone to enjoy October the Gabor way. Here are six autumnal activities to add a touch of sophistication to your season:
1. Take a Flask on an Autumn Walk
There’s nothing more timeless than wrapping up warm, filling a flask with your favourite hot drink, and heading out to enjoy the crisp air. Trade in summer’s green leaves for the rich russets and golds of autumn, crunch over fallen leaves, and maybe even trip over the occasional acorn; it’s all part of the charm. And of course, at Gabor, we’re always about the footsteps.
2. Collect Conkers
Conkers aren’t just nostalgic, they’re versatile. Keep them around the house to help deter spiders, thread them into garlands for autumn décor, or enjoy the classic childhood game of bashing them together. It’s a simple, old-fashioned activity that still feels sophisticated in its simplicity.
3. Decorate, Don’t Carve, Pumpkins
For a chic twist, skip the carving and instead paint your pumpkins in soft, autumnal tones. They make for beautiful décor inside or outside your home. Don’t forget to save the seeds; roast them with a sprinkle of salt or spice for the perfect autumn snack.
4. Bake a Pie
Nothing makes a home smell more autumnal than a pie in the oven. Apple, pumpkin, or pecan, whichever you choose, baking is a cosy, affordable way to bring the season into your kitchen and onto your table.
5. Try Foraging
Take an afternoon to explore local woods and hedgerows for seasonal finds, wild mushrooms, berries, and nuts. Not only is it a wonderful way to connect with nature, but your finds can also become part of your autumn décor or dining.
6. Make an Autumn Wreath
Use fallen leaves, berries, pinecones, and other natural finds to create a seasonal wreath. It’s an activity that feels mindful, creative, and leaves you with a beautiful handmade decoration to welcome guests.
Whether you’re keeping it low-key this Halloween or filling your home with seasonal touches, October is the perfect time to embrace autumn in all its cosy sophistication. From painted pumpkins to crunching leaves underfoot, these small, thoughtful moments are what make the season truly special.
Step into October the Gabor way, one thoughtful plan (and one stylish step) at a time.
